UK Electric Bike Regulations

*Bikes with specifications over 250W & 15.5mph (25kph) are not to be used on footpaths, cycle lanes or roads in the UK. These are not classed as e-bikes (EAPC's) and is illegal under current UK regulations.

It is the complete responsibility of the customer to ensure that you operate within all country and local laws. The customer assumes all liability and risk associated with the use of electric vehicle products and holds Esen Electric and its owners free from any liability

You can ride an electric bike if you’re 14 or over, as long as it meets certain requirements.

These electric bikes are known as ‘electrically assisted pedal cycles’ (EAPCs). You do not need a licence to ride one and it does not need to be registered, taxed or insured.

What counts as an EAPC?

An EAPC must have pedals that can be used to propel it.

It must show either:

  • the power output
  • the manufacturer of the motor

It must also show either:

  • the battery’s voltage
  • the maximum speed of the bike

Its electric motor:

  • must have a maximum power output of 250 watts
  • should not be able to propel the bike when it’s travelling more than 15.5mph

An EAPC can have more than 2 wheels (for example, a tricycle).

Where you can ride?

If a bike meets the EAPC requirements it’s classed as a normal pedal bike. This means you can ride it on cycle paths and anywhere else pedal bikes are allowed.

Other kinds of electric bike

Any electric bike that does not meet the EAPC rules is classed as a motorcycle or moped and needs to be registered and taxed. You’ll need a driving licence to ride one and you must wear a crash helmet.

After weeks and weeks of research I chose the Avaras electric bike, since I could no longer resist the temptation of an e bike after cycling for 30 years.

The assist on this bike is brilliant, but don’t be expecting miracles with the rest of the bike spec, if you are a cycling pro you may be disappointed, but if you are new to cycling or are a mid to high level rider, this bike is very competitively priced and you won’t be disappointed! It’s more than I could have hoped for, I’m now flying over hills

Finally, did it and got an E bike. The Avaris bike was everything I was looking for and more smooth, stylish good battery life and does’nt even look like an E bike so no stick from my mates (until they clocked on)

Wow . Really enjoyed riding the Avaris road bike . I ride a Trek Emonda SLR7 for competition in triathlon but I wanted to try the E bike for recovery and fun and it was great . It looks the part - really stylish - it feels great - big climbs are fun . It’s great to have the choice to make a ride as hard or as easy as you want it to be regardless off the gradients.

Had the bike a couple of months now and love it, been roaming the hills in my local area, which there are many in West Yorkshire. Well worth the investment!

The Avaris Roadrunner is an attractive looking bike and not obviously an E bike. I found it a very comfortable responsive ride with powerful disc brakes. The Avaris has an excellent assistive range with 9 levels of assistance providing minimal assistance right up to a high level of assistance making it a pleasure to ride over any terrain.
The bike control panel is easy to read and provides all the relevant information and ride statistics.
The battery is easy to remove and recharge with the supplied charger.
Overall throughly enjoyed my weeks trail on the bike coving over 50 miles
